Acceptance
By creating an account on TaleForks, requesting a magic-link to sign in, or contributing a paragraph to any story, you accept these Terms of Service and our Cookies notice. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
Who can use TaleForks
TaleForks is intended for users aged 13 or older. If you are between 13 and the age of majority in your jurisdiction, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian has reviewed these terms and consents to your use of the service.
You agree to provide accurate information when registering and to keep your account credentials secure. You are responsible for activity that takes place under your account.
Your account
TaleForks signs you in with a one-time magic link sent to your email address — there is no password. The cookie set after a successful sign-in is short-lived and signed by the server; it is the only way the service identifies you between requests.
You may close your account at any time by writing to the contact address below. Paragraphs you contributed before closing your account remain in the stories they belong to (other contributors built on them); the byline is anonymised at your request, and we retain the minimum data required to keep the canonical path intact and to honour these terms.
Contributions
A contribution is a paragraph you add as a child of an open leaf in a story. Once submitted, a contribution is durable: the row is written, the parent is marked as no longer a leaf, and other contributors begin building on it. We do not provide an undo for submitted contributions; we do provide a short window (currently five minutes from creation, subject to change) during which you may edit a contribution before any other paragraph is appended to it.
You warrant that each contribution is your own work, that you have the right to submit it, and that it does not infringe anyone else's rights. You are solely responsible for what you contribute.
The licence you grant
You retain ownership of the text you write. By submitting a contribution, you grant TaleForks and every other contributor to the same story a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable licence to host, display, reproduce, and distribute that contribution as part of the story it belongs to, including derivative paths and the canonical path that emerges from voting.
This licence is the smallest grant that lets the platform work: every reader sees your paragraph in context; every alternate path that branches off it remains readable; the canonical path includes your paragraph if it survives the vote. We will not relicence your contribution outside the story it belongs to without your permission.
Rules of conduct
You agree not to use TaleForks to:
- post content that is illegal in your jurisdiction or ours;
- harass, threaten, dox, or impersonate another person — within a paragraph, in a byline, or in any metadata;
- post sexual content involving minors, real-world violence directed at a specific person, or content designed to incite hatred or violence against a protected group;
- break the no-self-reply rule, scrape the API, or otherwise abuse the rate limits and the contribution flow;
- upload code, executables, or content that is not the prose paragraph the field is intended for.
Moderation & removal
We may hide, quarantine, or remove a contribution that violates these terms. Hidden contributions are replaced with a neutral placeholder so the tree's shape is preserved; the story keeps reading as a coherent sequence.
Removal modes (hide / quarantine / purge) and their effect on the canonical path are described in our public moderation documentation; the short version is that we err toward hide over purge, because purging mid-tree breaks the work of every contributor downstream of the removed node.
Voting & the canonical path
Readers vote on the paragraphs they prefer at each fork. When a story is marked ended, the highest-voted child at each fork — read top-down from the root — becomes the canonical path. Alternate paths remain readable as their own timelines, attributed to their writers; nothing is deleted because it lost a vote.
By contributing, you accept that the canonical path may not include your paragraph. You also accept that contributions you make may be cited, quoted, or summarised by us in service-related contexts (release notes, blog posts, study material) with attribution to the byline you wrote them under.
Intellectual property
The TaleForks name, branding, design system, source code, and the editorial curation of the platform are owned by us. Nothing in these terms transfers those rights to you. You may quote short excerpts from public stories for criticism, commentary, or review with attribution to the platform and the byline.
If you believe content on TaleForks infringes your copyright, write to the contact address below with the URL, the work allegedly infringed, and your contact details. We will respond, and where appropriate remove or replace the content per our moderation policy.
Suspension & termination
We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, particularly the conduct rules in section 6. We will give you notice and a reasonable chance to respond unless the breach is severe or ongoing harm to other users is likely.
On termination, your stored paragraphs remain in the stories they belong to, per section 4 above. You may request anonymisation of the byline at any time.
Disclaimers
TaleForks is provided as is and as available. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the content of any story is accurate, complete, or fit for any particular purpose. Stories on TaleForks are fiction unless explicitly labelled otherwise; nothing on the platform is professional advice.
Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, TaleForks will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the past twelve months (zero, for a free account) or one hundred euros.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced on the platform — typically with a banner that links to the new version — at least fourteen days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after the effective date confirms acceptance of the updated terms.
Governing law & contact
These terms are governed by the law of the jurisdiction in which the TaleForks operating entity is established. Pending legal review, the governing-law and operating-entity clauses are placeholders and will be confirmed before public launch.
